You may have tried to start a business online, or perhaps you are thinking about starting a business online right now. There are many things you need to consider, and there are also many things that you can use to your advantage in making the starting the business so much easier. One of these things you can use to make starting the business so much easier is to get a mentor. This aspect triggers another multitude of concerns on how to chose the correct mentor or where do I find a mentor I can trust, etc. I am going to share the things I look for in a mentor and how I found my mentor.
Tried to do everything myself
I have been starting businesses online for many years, and most of the time, I have the guy who was trying to do everything himself. I didn’t have a lot of money so I thought that I would do the work myself. After all, I use to hear if you don’t have money to invest in the training programs, you can still spend your own time and learn the skills and slowly grow your business.
However, after spending a lot of time trying to learn all the skills and investing lots of time, I still was coming up short and never really started to get the success I was desiring and ended up quitting or trying something else.
Out of date trainings
Many times I did purchase training programs and applied myself to the training, but I always felt the trains seemed to be dated and not relevant. In the back of my mind, I just knew the techniques taught were not what the trainer was implementing themselves in their businesses anymore if they ever did.
I use to hear about mentors, but always found them to be very expensive, and that was the case a few years ago. However, things have changed online, and there are more mentors, and their rates and training programs seem to be more accessible to the average person.
What to look for in a mentor
Firstly, I would look to see if the mentor has achieved the goals I want to achieve. If he/she is going to be able to teach and guide me. I want to know that they know what they are talking about from personal experience, not just reading and studying the subject.
Have they got a long term proven success story, not just a new fly by night or startup? Have they been around for a while?
Do they have real testimonials, not manufactured testimonials?
Do they offer any free training? I can check out the content and manner of teaching.
Here is a list of the things you can look for when considering a mentor;
- Do they offer support
- Community – do they have a community of the people they are training?
- Regular training – do they provide regular training
- Current training – are their training current and up to date?
- Software – do they also offer software that I am going to need, or would I have to source all the other platforms and software myself?
- Strategy – do they have a proven approach, are there any strategies, or is there just one that fits all?
- Step by step – do they have a systematic process to follow?
- Proven system – is there training new or do they have a proven long-term method?
- Achieved what I want to achieve has the mentors and trainers achieved what I am trying to achieve?
- Teaches what he does – do they teach what they do in their own business?
- Recommendation – has this mentor been recommended to me, therefore probably by a happy customer.
- Free training to see the quality – do they offer free training to sample their training?
- No obligation – what is their guarantee and how transparent are they or are they trying to make getting our cancelling difficult and complicated?
- Able to offer to build your business around your interests not forced to develop their business
This by no means is a definitive list, but it is there to get you thinking what you are looking for in a mentor. It is not just a case of ok, your look like you have a training program, and I hope you can teach me what I need to do.
The wrong mentor
Just remember by making the wrong choice you not only are wasting your money training you are also going to be wasting your time. And effort and bad training and advice to ruin your business idea and reputation before it even starts.
My mentor is someone who recommended to me, and after I did my due diligence, I was happy to get involved with his program.
I offered a three part-training program which amounted to about 3 hours of valuable training for free. I didn’t have to commit to anything, and I could absorb the training and put it into practice with no obligation to commit to anything else.
Quality of the training
I was amazed at the quality of the training and even more so knowing that this was the free training they were delivering – I asked myself if this is what they are offering for free – how good must their paid training be?
Decade of experience
I loved the fact that they had achieved what I wanted to achieve and had a proven step by step system that they have developed over more than a decade of helping similar minded people to build successful businesses online. Many of their students have been with them all this time and have become trainers themselves. A great indication of a good company to trust.
Good fit for the training
I also liked the attention they put in to make sure that I was a good fit for their company and its training program. I felt that they were not looking to include anyone into their community or their training program; they needed to make sure that we were a good fit for each other.
The training set in modules and I could go through the modules as they fit in my life, and there are also daily and weekly training that I can tap into whenever I want.
There is support and help in every aspect of your development. From the very first day. Especially when you are new and timid to ask stupid questions, you quickly realised they everyone in training and the community s there to help. Everyone is building their businesses and are all at various stages of success, and that alone is inspiring as you can also see how people and businesses are developing as you are learning and growing yourself.
The training is very hands-on and to not use a cliché, but someone is always there to help in anything you may be stuck with.
