Well if you are anything like me, you would have started a few businesses online. However, after a few weeks, months or years you realize the business you were so enthusiastic about isn’t working and inevitably you decide to quit. Why is that the case? Why do so many businesses fail in the first few years? More specifically, why do so many online businesses fail? Well, I am going to explain what I believe to be the biggest mistake people make when starting an online business.

Many businesses fail

There are many reasons businesses fail, and it is no surprise and a well-documented fact most businesses fail with in the first few years. However, when it comes to starting a business online, there are even higher rates of failure, probably higher than others as most people think starting a business online is easy. (They don’t have to invest too much in the start, and once they are up and running the business is just going to grow, and they are going to live this fantastic comfortable lifestyle.)

Well, the truth of the matter is, starting a business online is in many respects a more straightforward option due to the fact you don’t have to invest a vast amount in premises or stock, (dependent on the business you are looking to start). You can prevent the biggest mistake people make when starting an online business.

Invest in yourself

However, there is still a need for investment. You are going to have to invest in yourself. You are going to have to learn how to do things online. Yes you may think that you have surfed the internet for years and sent emails you may know a little – however, there is just so much more than finding yourself around the internet and sending emails. 

There is more to know than you realise

You need to know exactly how things work online, understand what the search engines and the various platforms require to be ranked and found by people searching for your products. You have to know how to write copy that is going to appeal to the interest of your potential customer, ask the right questions and then be able to keep their attention long enough to offer the right offer (product or service). However, you will be able to learn all this and prevent the biggest mistake people make when starting an online business.

These are just the false beliefs and perceptions people have

The biggest mistake people make when starting an online business, thinking they have to do it on their own.

Now the truth of the matter is, you can eventually do it on your own, but it is going to take a super commitment to be able to withstand all the disappointments and failures along the way. 

It is going to take so much longer for you only have your experience to learn from or you will have to find people who have had a similar goal and then learn what they did and how they overcome specific issues. 

The learning curve is going to hold your development and your business growth back as you have to repeat certain aspects, and through all this highs and lows you are still going to have to remain super committed. 


The result for most is they eventually quit.

This for a few reasons:

  • Not really being committed (although they may think they are)
  • No money to invest in learning, marketing or to maintain a living,
  • Finding no success due to knowledge and mistakes
  • Zero progress as it is just taking too long to learn and get things set up and making mistakes,
  • No strategy to follow, making it up as you go,
  • No support form friends or family,
  • Feeling completely alone, as you see everyone else succeed, but you are failing,
  • Often changing direction in strategy,
  • And the list goes on….

However, it does not have to be like that. There is a solution.


The solution is – you need to find someone who has achieved what you are looking to achieve and then model their behaviour. 

Sounds easy

I know that sounds easy enough and you have probably heard it before. Then why are there still so many people failing in starting or growing their business online? Why are some many still struggling with the biggest mistake people make when starting an online business? By trying to do it all on their own.

You have to take action

Knowing this point is not enough; you have to put it into practice. You have to take action.

So once you have found someone who has achieved the success you are looking to achieve – how do you get to learn from them and get to model their strategies. They are not just going to give it too you. 

Find a mentor

Well, you need to find a mentor who has achieved what you are looking to achieve. The mentor most probably has a program they have painstakingly put together of their development and steps to success. You will be able to follow their strategy, learn from the mistakes they make and learn what is necessary so what to focus your limited attention on that is going to deliver the results.

You may have also heard of getting a mentor and thought ‘these guys are just looking to sell me loads of stuff and don’t care for my success or offer any real value or training’.


Be careful who you choose

However, this may, unfortunately, still be true in many scenarios, as there are always going to be those who improperly do things to make a quick buck.

In saying this, the online world is rid of many who take advantage in this manner. However, there are still people around who will take advantage of those they can, so be diligent in your decisions. The best way to find a mentor is through someone who recommends the person and their training program. More often than not, there will be great testimonials to read, and you will be able also to get a snippet of the training that offered for free.


I am in this space for a long time trying to start a business online and have thousands of stories from experience to tell. However, what I can completely and honestly say is that trying to start a business on your own is probably one of the most stressful and difficult things you could do.

It all change for me

The moment I found my mentor, it changed everything for me. For the first time, I felt I had a set action plan I would be able to implement, rather than try things and see if they work. 

I had a mentor who would be able to guide and identify problems before they occurred and who also had the strategies and experience to advise accordingly. I didn’t have to make the same mistakes they made. I could bypass the mistakes and focus on the results.

You don’t have to figure it all out

I didn’t have to figure out what the best platforms were for my business as they have already made all the mistakes and mastered the various platforms and can steer and guide me to the best for my business and then also train me how to best use whichever platform.

I was also able to join a vast community who were all in various stages of their businesses and are so willing to give back and help each other by sharing their experiences.

A good mentor program will also have regular training programs and training so you may be current in the online world, which is exceptionally fluid and ever-changing.

So there is no need for anyone to start an online business on their own and try and do everything by themselves, you are probably going to fail if you try this strategy. Don’t be a victim to the biggest mistake people make when starting an online business.

So we are all familiar with the largest social media platforms, and most people have a fan or business page. As the biggest social media platform in the world, it is no surprise that it is the place where conversations take place. Or at least that is where they should take place. To be able to grow your likes you do need to have conversations with your audience.

So the question I would ask you is, “Do you chat with your fans or do you tale at them?

You may think this is a strange question, however just by having a scan of the number of fans may be a telltale sign that you are probably talking at your fans rather than with them.

The more you chat to your fans, the higher your audience will grow. Make the most of this social media goliath and start talking to and with your fans/audience rather than at them, and your engagement and audience will grow i.e. grow your likes.

Talk Back To Your Fans

When you get comments on your posts, you need to make sure that you reply to the comments. However, if there is no reply after a fan comment, the conversion potential of the thread dies.

You are also able to promote your other social media pages by adding social tabs to your page. So if you are using different social media platforms, why not add tabs for each of them. I.e. Google+, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. and grow your likes.

Post Regularly

To create and maintain the interest of your fans and grow your likes, you need to post regularly. If you are posting irregular or seldom your fans are less likely to like or share your posts. The platforms make it very easy to see the latest posts by date, stamping each post and also grouping in months. So to create interest and generate conversation, make sure you are posting regularly.

So in conclusion, make sure you are talking to and with your fans rather than just talking at them. 

Continue the conversation by replying to the comments to your posts.

Keep interested and variety by posting photos and videos, which are high quality, connect to your other social platforms with the tabs and make sure you are posting regularly. Rinse and repeat and enjoy the growth and engagement with your fans.

I am reading the “Awaken the giant within” by Anthony Robbins. I must say that I was expected to be blown away by the content. Needless to say, I have not been disappointed.

Not Disappointed

I have listened to many of Tony Robbins podcasts. Have also watched the Netflix ‘ I am not your guru’. As you would expect I like the way Tony Robbins thinks and delivers his positive energy in all his messages.
